The Cultural Roots Behind Community Cafe

As we prepare to close the doors at Community Cafe’s Laurel Avenue home and begincreating our next chapter on Springfield Avenue, we’ve been reflecting on the details that helped shape this space into something more than a cafe.
One of those details has been quietly greeting guests from the wall since the beginning.
The “Welcome to Edo’s” mural, created by former Lumin partner Salka’Tula Bondoc Mafla, was never meant to be simply decorative. It was designed as a visual expression of the roots of Lumin Ecosystem and the people who helped bring Community Cafe to life.
At first glance, it feels playful and bright — a cheerful welcome wrapped in color. But look a little closer, and the mural reveals something deeper.
Flowers Representing Our Roots
The flowers woven throughout the piece were chosen to reflect the countries connected to the founding members of Lumin Ecosystem and Community Cafe.
Costa Rica — The soft purple orchid-like blooms evoke Guaria Morada, the national flower of Costa Rica. It represents grace, resilience, and the kind of beauty that quietly endures.
Portugal — The delicate purple sprigs recall Lavender, a flower long associated with warmth, calm, and the comforting rituals of everyday life.
Ecuador — The warm orange tropical bloom rising along the edge calls to mind Ecuador’s lush botanical landscapes and remarkable biodiversity — a reflection of the vivid color and natural abundance that define so much of the country.
Philippines — The vivid coral-red Hibiscus reflects the Philippines, where hibiscus — known as Gumamela — is familiar, vibrant, and woven into daily life.
Each bloom carries its own meaning, but together they tell a shared story — one of migration, heritage, family, memory, and the different paths that converged to create this place.

From the beginning, Community Cafe was never only about coffee. It was about creating a gathering place shaped by lived experience. A place where cultures meet naturally. A place where stories, flavors, and traditions can sit side by side at the same table.
That mural became a quiet reminder of that vision.
For many guests, it may have simply been a colorful piece of art. For us, it has always symbolized belonging. It reflects the idea that community is not built from sameness — it is built from the beauty of many histories growing together.
As we prepare to leave this location, we wanted to share the meaning behind this piece because it represents something we hope carries forward with us.
Walls change. Addresses change. But the roots remain.
The spirit behind Lumin Ecosystem — honoring where we come from while creating space for connection, creativity, and community — will continue into whatever comes next.
And so, as we say goodbye to this chapter, this mural feels especially fitting.
It was never just a welcome sign.
It was the story of how we got here.
